How you get there from here: interaction of visual landmarks and path integration in human navigation.

How do people combine their sense of direction with their use of visual landmarks during navigation? Cue-integration theory predicts that such cues will be optimally integrated to reduce variability, whereas cue-competition theory predicts that one cue will dominate the response direction. We tested these theories by measuring both accuracy and variability in a homing task while manipulating in...

Behavioral Experiments in Spatial Cognition Using Virtual Reality

Virtual reality is used as a novel tool for behavioral experiments on humans. Two environments, Hexatown and Virtual T ubingen, are presented. Experiments on cognitive maps carried out in the Hexatown environment are reported in this paper. Results indicate that subjects are able to acquire con guration knowledge of the virtual town even in the absence of physical movement. Simpler mechanisms ...

Vectors, routes and maps: new discoveries about navigation in insects.

More than a decade ago, social insects were thought by some to possess a cognitive map that allowed them to move along novel pathways between points in the environment. Subsequent experimentation, however , has established that insects navigate using vectors, snapshots and landmark-based routes, and do not use cognitive maps. Two recent papers have reported the investigation of the mechanisms t...

Reference frames in virtual spatial navigation are viewpoint dependent

Spatial navigation in the mammalian brain relies on a cognitive map of the environment. Such cognitive maps enable us, for example, to take the optimal route from a given location to a known target. The formation of these maps is naturally influenced by our perception of the environment, meaning it is dependent on factors such as our viewpoint and choice of reference frame. Yet, it is unknown h...

Age and gender differences in various topographical orientation strategies.

Orientation in the environment can draw on a variety of cognitive strategies. We asked 634 healthy volunteers to perform a comprehensive battery administered through an internet website (www.gettinglost.ca), testing different orientation strategies in virtual environments to determine the effect of age and gender upon these skills. Older participants (46-67years of age) performed worse than you...
